Balance Diagnoses

After having a complete physical examination including a detailed medical history, your physician may refer you to an audiologist to undergo further testing. Your balance system is primarily located in the inner ear – which connects with the brain, brainstem, eyes and sensory nerves located throughout your body. Audiologists have the ability to assess where your imbalance is occurring throughout your body through a number of highly sophisticated tests. These may include:

VNG-videonystagmography

In this test you are given goggles to wear which have sophisticated infra-red cameras that track and record eye movements. A series of tests are run and compared to normative data.

VEMP-vestibular evoked myogenic potentials

This test uses generated sound and surface electrodes placed throughout the head and neck to identify if the vestibular nerve is working, thus identifying the location of an injury.

Electrocochleography (ECochG)

Electrodes are placed in the ears and measure electrical potentials generated in the inner ear to measure elevated pressure inside the cochlea.
