Selection of children’s books supporting speech and hearing education during National Speech Month

ESHC at the Newcastle Library for National Speech, Language, and Hearing Month

Children’s books on communication differences featured in the Evergreen Speech and Hearing Clinic’s awareness display for National Speech Month.

May is National Speech, Language, and Hearing Month! At Evergreen Speech and Hearing Clinic (ESHC), we’re excited to be out in the community raising awareness and celebrating all the ways we communicate.

This year, our team put together a fun and educational display at the Newcastle Library to help kids and families learn more about communication disorders; things like speech delays, hearing loss, or challenges with language. We wanted to create something that sparks curiosity and helps normalize different ways of communicating.

As part of the display, we included three children’s books that highlight characters with communication differences, so kids can read stories that reflect a variety of experiences. The books we picked are:

  • I Talk Like a River by Jordan Scott – a beautifully written story exploring the experience of stuttering
  • Something to Say About My Communication Device by Kimberly Tice and Venita Litvack – highlighting the voice and perspective of AAC users
  • Steggie’s Stutter by Jack Hughes – a warm and gentle story about a dinosaur learning to embrace his speech differences

If you’re in the area, stop by! You’ll find not only the books and display, but also some fun speech-themed coloring pages and stickers for the kids to take home.

This is just one of the ways we’re trying to be more present in the community and start conversations about speech, language, and hearing. At ESHC, we believe that everyone deserves a voice, and we’re committed to helping make that happen through awareness, education, and support!

We hope you’ll swing by the library, check out the display, and maybe learn something new along the way!
