Hearing Safety for Little Ears

Tips for a Sound-Safe Summer

As summer kicks into full swing, it’s important to think about more than just sunscreen and hydration. Our children’s ears need protection too.

Between fireworks, concerts, lawn equipment, and crowded pools, summer can be surprisingly loud. While these experiences are fun, they can pose a risk to developing ears. Sound levels above 85 decibels (dB) (about the volume of a loud hairdryer) can cause hearing damage with prolonged exposure.

Why Children’s Hearing Is More Vulnerable

Children’s ears are still developing, and their smaller ear canals mean that sound pressure can be more intense. This makes them more susceptible to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), which often happens gradually and without noticeable symptoms at first.

Common Summer Noise Hazards

  • Fireworks (150–170 dB) – Even brief exposure can be harmful
  • Outdoor concerts and sporting events (100–120 dB)
  • Lawnmowers and power tools (90–100 dB)
  • Car windows down on the highway (85–95 dB)

How to Protect Your Child’s Hearing

  • Use child-sized hearing protection. Earmuffs made for children are effective and comfortable. Brands like Alpine Muffy and Baby Banz are great options.
  • Limit exposure time. If you’re attending a loud event, take breaks in quieter areas.
  • Control what you can. Lower the car radio volume, move away from speakers, and avoid standing near engines or generators.
  • Know the signs. If your child covers their ears, complains of ringing, or seems sensitive to sounds afterward, it’s time to intervene.

Long-Term Benefits of Hearing Health

Healthy hearing is foundational for speech, learning, and social development. The good news? Most noise-related hearing loss is preventable.

With a little awareness and planning, you can make sure your child’s summer is full of memories, not missed sounds.
