Early Language Intervention
The Early Language Intervention Program (ELIP) at Evergreen Speech and Hearing Clinic works with children and parents to teach language facilitation strategies that can be applied at home. The program is based on the theory that children learn language in their day-to-day interactions with people in their environments.
The ELIP program is offered two times per week for a six-week period. The program provides practical training for parents to assume the primary role in their child’s language intervention.
What is a Language Delay?
A child’s communication is considered delayed when their speech or language skills are considerably behind that of their peers. There can be many reasons for a delay in speech or language and the signs can include:
- Delayed development of nonverbal communication – pointing and other gestures
- Delayed use of words
- Difficulty understanding what is said
- Difficulty following directions
- Immature/inappropriate grammatical form
- Difficulty expressing ideas
- Limited vocabulary
- Incorrect use of words
- Inappropriate social interaction
Why Use ELIP?
The Early Language Intervention program is designed for toddlers and preschoolers who have demonstrated a language delay. It is crucial that children who have a language delay receive intervention as soon as possible to prevent long-lasting effects to their social, emotional, and educational development.
Through training, parents learn skills they can use in their home environment to improve their child’s communication abilities.
Project ImPACT
Project ImPACT (Improving Parents As Communication Teachers) is an evidence-based therapy that works with you, the parent, and your child to learn a variety of language facilitation strategies. You will partner with one of our speech-language pathologists to learn strategies to facilitate expressive and receptive language, social engagement, play skills, and imitation skills. These strategies will be used within play, daily routines, and activities.
Research shows that children learn communication skills through their daily interactions, play, and routines. By helping you, the parent, to use language facilitating strategies outside of the therapy appointment, we maximize the therapy your child receives.

What to Expect with Project ImPACT
Sessions will be scheduled one to two times weekly and will be 30 minutes in length. The program lasts approximately three to four months, depending on your child’s needs and progress rate. Sessions will generally begin with a check-in and problem solving any difficulties that occurred over the past week. We will then review a previously learned strategy or learn a new strategy. The strategy will then be demonstrated, and you will practice it with your child. Finally, a practice plan will be discussed at the end of the session.
The structure of the sessions change depending on your child’s individual needs. If you have any questions about Project ImPACT, please contact us! We look forward to helping your child improve their communication.
