Children with ADHD may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Be impulsive.<\/li><li>Struggle to pay attention.<\/li><li>Have poor organizational skills.<\/li><li>Avoid tasks requiring sustained mental effort.<\/li><li>Be easily distracted.<\/li><li>Have difficulty sitting still.<\/li><li>Take on multiple tasks at a time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While many children and adults struggle with these skills, if these traits have a major impact on quality of life or a person\u2019s ability to function, they may be diagnosed with ADHD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overlap with Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been an increase in the number of ADHD diagnoses over the past few decades, which means the likelihood of incorrect diagnoses has likely also increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/everhear.com\/hearing\/hearing-health\/hearing-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hearing loss is common<\/a> and shares many symptoms with learning disabilities like ADHD. This is because even a mild hearing loss can cause a child to miss as much as 50% of what is said in their classroom. In school, this can look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Poor academic performance.<\/li><li>Inattentiveness.<\/li><li>Not responding when spoken to.<\/li><li>Inappropriate responses to questions.<\/li><li>Difficulty with social interactions at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/parks\/find\/parks\/meridian-playground\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meridian Playground<\/a>.<\/li><li>Acting out.<\/li><li>Low self-esteem.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These symptoms are commonly mistaken for a learning disability, oftentimes leading to an inaccurate diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Tell the Difference Between ADHD &amp; Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, there are some key ways to tell the difference between a learning disability and hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children with ADHD tend to develop speech-language skills alongside their peers, while children with hearing loss tend to experience delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a child diagnosed with ADHD does not respond well to medication, it may be the case that hearing loss is to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A hearing test can easily determine whether your child is suffering from hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that it\u2019s possible for a child to experience both hearing loss and a learning disability at the same time.
