{"id":10476,"date":"2022-08-17T15:41:01","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T22:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everhear.com\/?p=10476"},"modified":"2022-08-17T15:41:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T22:41:06","slug":"what-are-the-benefits-of-newborn-hearing-testing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everhear.com\/what-are-the-benefits-of-newborn-hearing-testing\/","title":{"rendered":"What Are the Benefits of Newborn Hearing Testing?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>According to one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2007\/0501\/p1349.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>, \u201c19 to 42 percent of profoundly hearing-impaired children will be missed with targeted, risk factor\u2013based screening.\u201d This is why, in 2000, the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) guidelines were created. This program ensures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>All babies are screened for <a href=\"https:\/\/everhear.com\/hearing\/hearing-health\/hearing-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing loss<\/a> no later than <strong>one month of age.<\/strong><\/li><li>If a baby does not pass the screening, they must get a diagnostic hearing test no later than <strong>three months of age<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Children diagnosed with hearing loss must receive intervention services no later than <strong>six months of age.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/hearingloss\/data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> estimates that with the EHDI program in place, about 98% of all children born in the United States have had their <a href=\"https:\/\/everhear.com\/hearing\/hearing-health\/hearing-loss\/hearing-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing screened<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Newborn Hearing Tests Are Available?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/everhear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/young-child-ear-exam-tubes-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"A Baby and her doctor\" class=\"wp-image-10478\" width=\"284\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everhear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/young-child-ear-exam-tubes-1280x854.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/everhear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/young-child-ear-exam-tubes-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/everhear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/young-child-ear-exam-tubes-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/everhear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/young-child-ear-exam-tubes-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/everhear.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/young-child-ear-exam-tubes-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are two tests that are widely used to screen babies for hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ABR testing measures responses to sound that come from the cochlea, an organ within the inner ear, and the auditory brainstem. During this test, electrodes are placed on the baby\u2019s head and earphones are placed in the baby\u2019s ears. Sounds are played through the earphones, and the electrodes record any responses. Responses will be detected if the baby has normal hearing; if they have hearing loss, no responses will be detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>OAE testing measures responses coming from the cochlea as well. For this test, a small earbud is placed in the baby\u2019s ear, which contains both a microphone and an earphone. As sounds are played through the earbud, any echo responses coming from the cochlea are picked up by the microphone. If the baby hears normally, the echo will be detected; if they have hearing loss, no echo will be detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Screen Newborns?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/quick-statistics-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders<\/a> reports that two to three of every 1,000 babies in the U.S. are born with a detectable level of hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Left untreated, this can have devastating impacts on speech and language development. From the moment your baby is born, they begin learning language by hearing it used around them.
