{"id":3330,"date":"2012-06-11T08:50:59","date_gmt":"2012-06-11T16:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.everhear.com\/?p=3330"},"modified":"2024-11-26T10:52:33","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T18:52:33","slug":"toddlers-may-ignore-their-own-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everhear.com\/toddlers-may-ignore-their-own-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"Toddlers May Ignore Their Own Speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the most recent issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article.cfm?id=learning-to-listen\">Scientific American<\/a> they dove into the workings of aural feedback &#8211; the phenomenon where adults subconsciously listen to their own voice to tune the pitch, volume and pronunciation of their speech &#8211; and noted that a new study finds young children just learning how to talk do not utilize this function. The results of the study offers clues about how kids learn language\u2014\u00adand how parents can help.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the study worked. Ewen MacDonald, a professor at the Center for Applied Hearing Research at the Technical University of Denmark, wanted to see if toddlers could alter their\u00a0pronunciation\u00a0using aural feedback. He had adults and children play a video game in which they guided the actions of a robot by repeating the word \u201cbed.\u201d Through headphones, the players heard their own voice every time they spoke\u2014but with the frequency spectrum shifted so they heard \u201cbad\u201d instead of \u201cbed.\u201d MacDonald found that adults and four-year-old kids tried to com\u00adpensate for the error by pronouncing the word more like \u201cbid,\u201d but two-year-olds never budged from \u201cbed,\u201d suggesting that they were not using auditory feedback to monitor their speech.<\/p>\n<p>Although the toddlers may have been suppressing the feedback mechanism, MacDonald thinks they might not start listening to themselves until they are older.
