Did you know that hearing devices alone cannot restore hearing? Yes, the instruments amplify the sounds allowing them to travel to your brain, however it is the brain that deciphers and interprets these sounds. Often times people who have a hearing loss choose to not utilize hearing instruments for many years. During this time your brain begins to “forget” how to decipher sounds and recognize what is important and what is not. When people finally decide to use amplification, their brain may not be ready for all the extra sounds it is now able to re-hear!
This is where aural rehabilitation comes into play! By using a program, such as LACE you are able to train your brain how to better interpret sounds; how to focus on what is important and how to ignore the rest.
We have been recognized by Neurotone as a clinic that is truly helping our patients not just hear, but listen. The group interviewed Dr. Cheryl Lokanis to discuss the clinics use of the LACE technology in our aural re-habilitation program.
